Max “Adlersson” Herzberg from Dresden, 20 years old, has decided not to spend his life working. Since then, he has been talking about knives and all kinds of other products, opening gangsta rap fan boxes, talking about himself, getting drunk in public, ranting and raving, humiliating weaker people, cracking crude jokes and testing every boundary he sees – Max is a YouTuber and makes a living from it.
Most of his friends have their own channels on YouTube and Instagram, some of them quite successful. Max and his gang are dubious role models, but certainly celebrities of their generation with more than 300,000 active fans. Is Max a violence-glorifying influencer with right-wing tendencies or an ordinary adolescent in search of stability and identity at a time when the boundaries between private and public life are increasingly disappearing? Perhaps he is both, probably without being too aware of it.
LORD OF THE TOYS accompanies Max and his clique for a summer and leaves behind a dystopian image of the first generation of young adults who don’t know life without the internet, YouTube and Instagram. The film portrays them and examines the world in which their life models thrive: the West in general and East Germany in particular.
