MEUTHEN´S PARTY
93 Min (GER) 2017 – 5.1
“I look like a Green”, Jörg Meuthen reassures himself before entering the event venue. The counter-demonstrators won’t recognize him as the AfD’s leading candidate, like a sheep in Jack Wolfskin. Economics professor Meuthen maneuvers smoothly through the state election campaign in Baden-Württemberg at the beginning of 2016; mined terrain, time and again party supporters get carried away with statements for which he has to find wordy excuses.
The man avoids any strident tone and knows when to turn on the microphone. A transformation. “We are so important,” Meuthen giggles at his sudden popularity and seems surprised by the devotion of his men. “I tend to slow people down,” he assures them, distancing himself from Pegida and racism, but he becomes increasingly intoxicated by his new importance. Finally, having entered the state parliament with around 15 percent ahead of the SPD, he hooted at the national party conference, drunk with success: “Away from the left-red-green infested Germany of 1968”. It’s a wolf in a functional jacket after all.
